Where Have I Been?

I don't like candles.
The back yard Thursday morn. Look at the ice on the lines.
The whole tree fell over. Saw many, many like this around town.

Of course that title line is meant very, extremely, and even more so sarcastically. The ice storm of the year ( ) hit Indiana Wednesday (you didn't send it, did you?!) and brought the lovely Arm Pit of America to a complete stand-still. The week before, I'm in Florida soaking up the sunshine, enjoying the beach...the next week, I'm freezing my rear end off without electricity.

We were without power from 6:00 pm Wednesday to 8:30 pm Saturday. It seemed like it lasted an eternity. We had water (and hot water even, because we have a gas water heater) and we broke down and lit the wood burning stove I think on Thursday night. I have to add here, since I'm whining like my favorite whiner, that I have had bronchitis and the fireplace just about kills my sinuses/allergies anyway. Mix the two and what do you get? An inhaler from the doctor just so I can breathe. I also have to add that we didn't even have any freaking wood. We haven't used the thing for 4 years. The very wonderful neighbor was kind enough to give us some, and we found some of those not-really-wood firelogs at a couple of stores.

There were over 115, 000 people/places in the county without power to begin with. That's more people without power than there are in the entire city. It was unbelievable. Fallen trees and branches, incredibly thick ice, cold (and it snowed a couple of inches Friday night, too). Every transformer in our neighborhood blew on Wednesday evening. One by one. It was really freaky. Timothy has been out of school since early Wednesday afternoon - and he doesn't have school tomorrow either. I AM GOING TO WORK TOMORROW TO GET SOME PEACE AND QUIET.

Of course there's never much to eat in the house, so we drove all over town (the parts we could get to because there were so many trees down) on Thursday until we found a place to eat. We actually had found a Wendy's open, but as we waited in line at the drive-through, they lost power again. So we drove around some more and found a place where we waited for quite a while. But we ate. We've been eating out for days (which isn't that unusual, but...), and lost what food there was in the fridge and freezer. I guess it's one time I should be glad that we don't have much food in the house.

The electric and tree-trimming companies (locally and from many other states) have been working non-stop to restore power. They've been doing an awesome job. The initial estimate was at least 5 to 7 days; by yesterday they had maybe close to 90% restored. Amazing. It warmed up a bit today and the sun came out, so the ice is melting and falling like crazy. We had a branch fall on our power line today - that wonderful neighbor saw it, told me, and then went and found one of the power/tree guys and had him come over and remove it. The power didn't go out, but the branch was at least 6 feet tall and could have pulled the line down if we left it.

I think that's one of the things I'll always remember - not how miserable I was during these long, long days but how nice everyone was. Helpful. Looking out for each other. Chatting to pass the time while waiting in line to eat or at the few stores that had power (or generators). It's been an unbelievable experience, in more than one way, including lots and lots of prayers that have been answered each day.

(At least I have tons of pictures to "document" the experience. Here's just a few... )

I sat down at my desk this evening with every intention of making a pink bracelet for my niece...and ended up making this red one instead. You guys all know how crazy I am, so I suppose it really shouldn't be any surprise that I couldn't concentrate on the task at hand.

(The blurry pictures are supposed to be blurry...just a little experiment with macro, flash/no flash and focus - don't want ya to think I've completely lost my mind! )

I have the next two weeks off from work, and the first week I'll be at home with every intention of catching up with everybody. Really. I can see myself hiding at my computer, trying to get away from all the noise surrounding me with three, yes three, kids in the house. The second week I'll be "suffering" in Florida with absolutely no computer access...
